Wednesday 26th September 2018 – Camaret-sur-Mer, Crozon Peninsula, Brittany, France

We planned to stay for two nights at Camaret-sur-Mer so that we could do the walk in our somewhat old copy of ‘Holiday Walks in Brittany’ by Judy Smith (Sigma Press 2001). We bought this book many years ago when, every October half-term, we came on holiday with our great friends Ann & Nick to Normandy and Brittany but we never did Judy’s walk on the Crozon Peninsula. Officially, it starts in the centre of Camaret-sur–Mer but it passes through the alignments de Lagatjar, so that is where we joined it. The weather was excellent – blue skies, warm sun and little breeze, ideal for walking. It was a cool start with fleeces to keep us warm and by the end we were glad of shade.
The walk took along cliffs with beautiful sea views and further interest provided by the German WWII defences. Gun emplacements, bunkers observation posts littered the cliffs and it was obvious that large ammunition stores and command posts were under our feet. On the Pointe de Pen-Hir there was a huge monument to the Free French forces.
The walk continued along the coast until it turned inland to reach the seafront of Camaret. Here we found a small restaurant to have lunch before continuing round the Pointe du Grand Goulin and the Pointe de Toulinguet. We returned through the ruins of the relatively modern Manoir de Coecillan to the aire. This is a very gentle and interesting walk with lots of beautiful walks and is highly recommended.
Photos: Early on the walk we passed many WWII defences looking out towards England; Interesting rock formations; The boatyard and water tower at Camaret-sur-Mer; An arch on the last part of the walk.
