Sunday 30th March 2025 – Baeza, Spain

The clocks went forward overnight but we ignored that, with the alarm going off at 08:00 new time.
Today we are going to do something that we budgeted for on our 14 month odyssey but never actual did – we are going to leave the van and stay in a hotel. It is our Golden Wedding Anniversary on Monday 31st March and that falls between our 70th birthdays – a good reason for a little bit of luxury. We were going to stay at one of the state-run luxurious Paradores but we couldn’t find one with parking for a motorhome or a nearby aire in the area that we wanted to be in. We wanted to visit Baeza and found a smart hotel in the centre of the town, only a 15 minute walk from an aire. So, a few days ago, we booked a junior suite for a couple of nights.
After lunch in the van, we packed a two small bags and walked to the hotel. The room was very big with a lounge, bedroom and bathroom – the bathroom had a floor area larger than the whole of our motorhome. The hotel is a former convent and our room looked over the central courtyard. The building has been completely modernised, so there are few historic features but it is a very comfortable hotel.
A quick wander around the centre of the town was followed by a long soak in a real bath – something that we both miss when we are on our motorhome travels. I can’t say that we were impressed by the Jacuzzi features of the bath but, without the water jets and bubbles, it was very pleasant.
We booked a table at a restaurant on the edge of the town. As with Ubeda, its close neighbour, Baeza sits on the edge of a hill and the restaurant had a magnificent view over the olive groves to the mountains beyond, the highest of which were topped with snow. It was a very good meal, made even better by watching the sun set over that view.
