We saw all of the compact old town of Ainsa yesterday, so we
decided to leave when the road was open between 09:30 and 10:30. If we hadn’t
had left then, we would not have been able to leave until 12:30.
We headed for the Biesa Tunnel that straddles the border between Spain and
France. This must be one of the prettiest border crossings between the two
countries. We followed the Cinca River from Ainsa and, as we started to climb
steeply, the river cascaded over rocks just a few metres away. It was a really
beautiful scene and the road was very quiet – a lovely way to cross the border.
There were roadworks in the tunnel, which meant that it was operating with
one-way traffic controlled by traffic lights. Fortunately, we only had to wait
a couple of minutes. When we emerged from the tunnel, we were close to the snow
and the scenery was still good but not as pretty as on the Spanish side. We
descended quite rapidly to fairly flat land with mountains on either side.
We drove on, leaving the Pyrenees behind, passing a lovely looking aire in
Astaffort (note for future!) until we arrived in the aire at Fleurence. This
was very popular with the French – we were the only non-French van there. It is
a very pleasant aire, next to a river and with two lakes and a park alongside.
The town is a short stroll away. It was a very pleasant 24°C
when we arrived.
