After another relaxed start we set off for Gennes on the
other Loire. Just off the route, the AA Easy Read France map (a very good road
atlas) showed a menhir and the excellent www.megalithic.co.uk site showed that
it was interesting and easy to access. Before that we passed another menhir and
a Roman road shown on the map but we were unable to detect them.
The ‘Dolmen de la Pierre Couverte’ is between the village of Pontigne and the
town of Bauge and is well signposted from the village. There is a parking area
opposite the footpath that leads through woodland to the site. The sign at the
entrance to the wood gave all the rules (dogs on leads, no picnics etc.) and
also stated that the site closed on the 15th September. Just in time
then but there was no gate or fence and it seemed to be a rule that would not
and could not be enforced.
The dolmen was very impressive and was in good condition apart from some
mindless vandalism in the form of painted graffiti on the stone inside. A
picnic was had in the car park, not at the dolmen!
By mid-afternoon we arrived Les Rossiers-sur-Loire and crossed the majestic Loire
on a long bridge to reach Gennes and the campsite, ‘Au Bord de Loire’. The site
is right on the banks of the Loire and the village centre and Tourist
Information Office is just opposite. We had a quick walk into the village and
retreated to the van.
