We started early today to try to beat the heat and anticipated trying the siesta technique. We went into Asprovalta town in the morning and had a frappe (Greek cold coffee) whilst we were waiting for the Internet Café to open. After over two hours on the Internet, including finding and printing details of Bulgarian and Romanian campsites, we headed for a gyros taverna. It was a ridiculously hot and humid day with the temperature hitting 35°C and the taverna owner confirmed that it was unseasonably hot for the time of year – all the Greeks were complaining. After ice-cold beers and our last lovely Greek gyros, we returned to the campsite and relaxed in our recliner chairs positioned in deep shade under the large trees. We are beginners at siestas so we only slept briefly but then avoided any strenuous exercise, it was just too hot.
For the first time on the Odyssey, we had great difficulty trying to sleep due to the heat. The temperature in the van did not drop below 30°C all night and, for people not used to it, this is extremely uncomfortable - sweat just pours off you.
Photos: One of the very established permanent pitches at Asprovalta – the pitch was huge with a full-scale lawn and a vegetable garden with lots of produce. The owner had his sprinkler running the whole time that we were there.
