Saturday 2nd April 2022 - Glyfa, Greece

Today we decided to walk to the next village along the coast, Loutra Kallini, once a spa but this is no longer in operation. Before we set off I popped in to see Agelica and buy a couple of things from their shop. I chatted to her about her cooking and the recipes and before I knew it, she gave me some orange marmalade that she had just made and then took me off to collect some fruit. A trip back to the van was required before we could set off!

The walk took us along the very quiet road past fields of cloches and polytunnels bringing on cucumbers, courgettes and tomatoes. The village was not large but was obviously geared up for tourism with many eating places and cafes, although many had not yet opened for the season. There was a typical small chapel but inside it was beautifully decorated with fresco work and icons. The beach was large and gently sloping and I am sure that it will be very busy in the season.

The walk back was very pleasant and it was great to have the time to enjoy the countryside and sea views.

We decide to eat in tonight and have a simple, not too large, meal. We had also met a lovely couple, Matt and Leanne, who have set off on a real adventure in their motorhome with no plans to return to the UK. The EU retrictions on the time that UK citizens can spend in the EU (90 days in any 180) will cause them problems but they are planning to go to other countries when the time runs out. They are really interesting couple - Leanne is a forensic anthropologist and Matt ran a security and surveillance company before Covid caused it to close. We spent a lovely evening with them and wish them all the best with their travels.

Photos: The gifts from Agelica - orange marmalade, kumquats, manderin and the largest lemon that I have ever seen; Agelica said that she was waiting for some palm trees to be delivered and we saw them arriving just as we started our walk; The fresco paintings in the chapel; An icon of Christ with the cross for lent.
