We have decided to stay at least another couple of days as we really like the campsite and the area and we still have things that we want to do. Today we put on walking boots and hiked up a path beyond the caves and onto the high land above the gorge. The path was not well marked and we did not have a map, so it is not surprising that we went wrong. We were on a marked trail but it wasn't the one that we though that it was. Still we saw the site of the ancient Boruna Fortress and eventually found the viewpoint over the gorge and its monastery. Partially because we took an unexpected diversion, we saw lots of wildlife, especially butterflies, damselflies and a huge variety of pretty, non-biting insects. We tried to follow a signed 'Eco trail' but it was quite disappointing, not a patch on what we had already seen.
We made our way back down to the monastery and decided to treat ourselves to a full meal at the restaurant. Three excellent Bulgarian beers, a large plate of hors d'oeuvres and two Bulgarian pork kebabs, all for about £12. After that we gave up plans to do anything else in the afternoon and sat and relaxed. We were entertained by the occupants of three chalets opposite us who sang danced and played pipes during the evening.
