We headed east from Merida as the forecast for the west of
Spain was awful and south of Granada looked much better. However, as we approached
Orgiva in the Alpujarra Mountains of the Sierra Nevada, the forecasts for the
area deteriorated. We have had poor weather ever since we arrived in Spain and
it is much cooler and far, far wetter than normal for this time of the year.
There were many more olive groves on our route to Granada, thinning out as we
entered the Alpujarra Mountains. The road took us around Granada and we started
the twisty descent to Orgiva.
We spent some time in Orgiva, known as the Glastonbury of Spain, in 2008 when
we were on our 14 month European Sojourn. We really enjoyed our stay then and
had always planned a long stay on this trip. We had the idea of lots of
walking, excursions up into the surrounding villages and, for me, bike rides.
Looking at the weather forecasts it was clear that it would actually be a case
of hunkering down. Rain was forecast every day for at least another week and that
was definitely going to cramp our style.
We arrived at Camping Orgiva and it was just the same as we remembered it.
There was plenty of space and we chose a pitch with views of the surrounding
mountains. They are lovely views, providing that they are not obscured by low
clouds!
Photos: We past three wind turbine blades being transported on the motorway –
they are enormous!; Just a few of the olive groves on the route; Our pitch at
Camping Orgiva; A view of the mountains from the campsite with lots of low
cloud and is that snow that I can see?
