There will be very little blog over the next few days as we
will be hunkering down and doing very little.
On Saturday I walked the 25 minutes up past the orange and olive groves into
Orgiva. Beside the track are small irrigation ditches and these were full of
fast running water. This had nothing to do with the overnight rain but is
strictly controlled by a group that ensures that the water resource is shared
fairly between the farmers. Although there was water running today, another day
they will be dry as the water has been direct to another area. However, at the
moment there is no requirement for the water as there has been so much rain.
I popped in to the tourist information office, viewed the exhibition on local
mining (lead ore and fluorite) and picked up some leaflets. The walks around
Orgiva looked interesting but it will have to stop raining before we can do
those. The very helpful man pointed out the places of interest in the town and
also directed me to a bakery close by. I was pleasantly surprised to find that
the bakery had a wood-fired oven but it turned out that the bread wasn’t very
interesting. Most Spanish bread seems to be rather bland – if I was living
here, I would definitely be baking my own.
It rained considerably on the walk back to the van and, despite the umbrella, I
was quite wet when I arrived.
Sunday was very wet and we didn’t leave the van. It is difficult to work up any
enthusiasm to go out when the rain is continuous. We did take the few steps to
the campsite restaurant at lunchtime. The restaurant is open all year (as is the
campsite) and is very popular with the locals both for drinks in the bar and for
food. It was an excellent meal.
Photos: The was the bakery, hidden down an alley – the sign says ‘Horno de Leńa’,
oven of wood; Two main courses at the campsite restaurant – a Alpujarra
speciality and a huge pork steak; If you look very carefully, you will see snow
in the mountains above the campsite.
