The forecasts all said that it was going to rain all day
today and they weren’t wrong. Thursday is market day in Orgiva and, despite the
weather, we decided that we wanted to go to it. When I visited the tourist
office on Saturday, there was a large marquee next to it where they had been
holding the markets. The man in the office said “Now that the weather is
changing (??!!), they might remove it this week”. Sure enough, when we got
there it had been removed the day before and they had cancelled the market
because of the weather. It was now pouring down and after buying some excellent
bread in a small, rather alternative, covered market, we found a café to
shelter in. Just a few steps away was the main church of Orgiva and we watched
a lady finishing off a beautiful flower arrangement in Lenten colours. When we
left the church the rain changed to cloudburst proportions and, even though we
were sheltering under cover outside a bank, we got very wet from the bouncing
up off the pavement. Once the rain had reduced from torrential to very heavy,
we set off to the supermarket and had a very relaxed shop whilst waiting for
the rain to ease. Unfortunately, it wasn’t going to stop. Those irrigation
channels were now torrents, often overflowing across the road. I had questioned
why Jane had decided to pack her wellies before we left home - “Are you sure
that you are going to use them?”, I said. Now she was demonstrating what a good
idea it was, walking straight through the flowing water and deep puddles whilst
I tried to find a way to avoid the worst sections. We both arrived back very
wet.
