More motorway driving with a very busy A1 with lots of
contraflow sections but we kept moving. That is more than can be said for the
Northbound carriageway where there were horrendous queues – over 20 miles of
stationary or very slowly moving traffic. That would have been a delay of hours
for those at the back. We made a note to check the route conditions before
using the A1 when returning from Greece next month.
Turning off the A1 onto the A14, we lost all of the traffic but the motorway
was poorly maintained with long stretches of rough surface, especially the many
elevated sections where the badly misaligned segments jolted the motorhome.
The Green Village Assisi campsite is very large with many shady pitches and
great views of Assisi if you can get high enough to see over the fence. It also
has a good restaurant, serving reasonably-priced pizzas but, as we had pizza
yesterday, we chose other dishes that were very good. We missed out on their
speciality platters that were chosen by many tables and were served on trays,
sometimes over 2 metres in length and carried by two people.
Just as we were leaving the restaurant, a large group of people, mainly women,
arrived. They were probably pilgrims going to Assisi but they could also have
been a choir as some excellent singing drifted across to us in the van.
