We checked the BBC weather forecast before we left home and it showed snow in England and Calais for today. We didn't know when it was likely to arrive, so we decided on an early start to move south and out of the snow-affected area. Sure enough, the first flakes descended as we were finishing breakfast and there was a continuous, gentle fall as we drove out of the campsite.
The countryside in this area is not the most exciting in France but the sprinkle of snow over the fields and minor roads made it more interesting. Our decision to stick to the major roads was vindicated as they had been gritted and were clear, whereas the minor roads were icy with a covering of snow.
A thankfully uneventful journey led us to Gace where we had identified a camperstop with services including, allegedly, electricity. We found the site in front of the Hotel de Ville (Town Hall) in a quiet location in the centre of the town but there was no sign of any services. This was probably one of those sites, like Millau (see 5th December 2007), where the services were located nearby and electricity was provided for a short time whilst using the other services. It was still quite early, so we decided to push on to the next camperstop at Alencon, which would also give us a shorter journey the next day. This turned out to be rather basic and the fresh water was not working but, as we didn't need it, this was not a problem. In retrospect, Gace was a much better option provided that services could be found and we would certainly stay there in the future.
