Today
is my 69th birthday and I wanted to start the day in style. I walked
into the town centre, through a postern gate in the walls and found a
boulangerie. The croissants were almost as good as those from Burns The Bread
in Glastonbury and I succumbed to temptation and brought two small cakes for
later in the day.
Unlike our normal journeys in Europe, we decided to travel to Italy fairly
quickly and started today by driving through Belgium, Luxembourg and into
Germany. The weather was awful, with rain for almost all of the journey.
Fortunately, the motorways (unlike those in the UK) were not too busy and
therefore the journey was not too arduous. We crossed over the river Sure that
forms the border between Luxembourg and Germany and a short distance north we
came to Camping Alter Bahnhof nestled on the banks of the Sure. We would have
liked to take a pitch right next to the river but, just like England, the weather
had been very bad and the pitches were too soft. We chose a pitch on firmer
ground that still had a good view of the river.
We decided to have a meal in the campsite restaurant, well aware that it was
unlikely to be a gourmet experience. The beer and wine was good but the choice
was schnitzel (pork), sausages (pork) or salad (with optional pork).
Fortunately, we both like pork and we chose the schnitzel with pepper sauce,
which came with a good, simple salad and chips. Jane finished the meal with a
German Baileys equivalent and I decided to try the intriguingly-named Williams
Christ that turned out to be a rather pleasant schnapps.
Photos: Birthday cakes – shared with Jane, I didn’t eat them both!; View from
our pitch with the River Sure running at the bottom of the waterlogged pitch in
front of us.
