The
weather forecast for today was not good but it turned out to be much better
than yesterday. We bypassed Trier on the E45, climbing and getting an ice
warning from the van as the temperature dropped to 3°C but, after a brief hail storm, the temperature
rose and the sun appeared. Much of the rest of the journey was done in sunshine
and there was lovely scenery with lots of forest and views from viaducts over
pretty villages.
We were heading for the randomly selected See Camping Gunztal in Breitenthal
listed in the ACSI book. It looked pleasantly set on the edge of a lake and,
being just South East of Ulm, was a four and a half hour journey, about as much
as we want to do in a day. The website warned us that asphalting work outside
the site meant that there would be no access to the site from Monday 22nd
April until Thursday 25th. This was not a problem for us as we only
wanted to stay for one night. When we arrived (via a diversion caused by the
roadworks), we were told that we were the first guests this year as they had
only opened today and were going to close between Monday and Thursday. That
meant that we had our pick of pitches and we chose one overlooking the lake
with three small islands visible and families of geese and goslings wandering
along the grass or swimming on the lake. A lovely view to watch as dusk fell.
