The
journey from Somerset to Dover was complicated by roadworks and an accident on
the M3 causing us to take a diversion onto A roads close to Basingstoke. The
delay meant that we didn’t have time to stop for a coffee, getting to Dover just
before the required 60 minutes prior to departure of the ferry. There was a
queue for the Irish Ferries check-in - after 20 minutes only 2 cars and one
coach had got through. We were beginning to think that the ferry was going to
leave before we got through check-in but things speeded up and we were
quickly called up to board. The French coast was very clear from Dover and it
was the best visibility that we have ever had on the crossing.
From Calais we headed North and then East to an aire (glorified car park) at
Bergues – a lovely walled town close to the Belgian border. We have stayed
there before and had
wandered through the town following an historic town trail provided
by the tourist information office (available online). This time we just settled
in for a simple meal in the van.
Photos: The main square in Bergues taken during our last visit in November
2023. Most of the square was cordoned off as they were renovating it. It is
obviously a big project as it is still on-going now.
