Tuesday 21st October 2025 – Charleville-Mezieres, France

We drove through more of Germany to the Luxemburg border where we crossed over the Mosel to be greeted by bank lined with vineyards on the Luxemburg side. It is such a small country and we were soon round Luxemburg city and, after stopping for very cheap diesel, we crossed into Belgium. We had a 20 minute delay for roadworks but then crossed into France and the town of Charleville-Mezieres. Four countries in less than four hours!
We have visited Charleville-Mezieres a number of times and always stayed at the Camping Car Park (CCP) site located on the opposite bank of the river to the town. We headed to the CCP site but the barrier system refused to let us in. The situation was resolved by a brief call to the helpline and we were able to park up.
The walk into the town across a pedestrian bridge is a short one and we then embarked on a wander around the streets. We wanted to have a proper French meal but, rather like back home, there was the choice of Chinese, Vietnamese, lots of Italian, especially pizza, hamburgers but hardly any French. I love food from other countries but we were visiting France and really wanted French food. We found one French restaurant but everything was served with chips and another looked good but only had the choice of three main dishes and they didn’t appeal. We finally found a slightly more up-market French restaurant and at least they weren’t going to serve everything with chips. I chose lamb shank and Jane chose a local red turkey. When they arrived, they came with …………. chips – no vegetables, just chips! We were in Northern France where ‘fritteries’ serve chips with mayonnaise and many other dishes involving chips, but it was rather disappointing to be served them in a pleasant restaurant.
Photos: As we walked around the town, we were somewhat surprised to see this sign to Manchester – it turned out that after WWI, Manchester raised funds for a new hospital for Mezieres, which the locals then named ‘Manchester’, therefore the sign was to the hospital; The very large square of Charleville-Mezieres – we could hear the bells of the Hotel de Ville clocktower from the aire.
