We had a very pleasant walk out into the surrounding countryside
and Dave and Anne met some more of their neighbours. We were warned not to walk
in the woods on a Sunday – apparently, the locals are very keen on hunting and
men with guns are not compatible with woodland walks!
After long goodbyes, we set off down the lane to the local Grotte de
Rouffignac.
The cave was occupied in prehistoric times and contains 250 drawings of animals
that were created 16,000 years ago. Guided visits are made on a small electric
train that took us one and a half kilometres into the cave to where most of the
drawings are to be found. The tour was given in French but we were provided
with an iphone with written information about the cave and we were able to read
about it as we travelled. The guide also spoke good English and was happy to
answer our questions. The drawings are very impressive and, surprisingly, are
thought to have been created over a short period of time by no more than five
people.
We drove on to an aire at Pageas, a small village with no commerce apart from a
small restaurant that was, very conveniently, located at the entrance to the
aire.
Photos: The entrance to the Grotte de Rouffignac – photography is not allowed
inside the cave.
