Although the tourist information office at the Villa el
Ruedo didn’t tell us, we discovered that there was a museum in Almedenilla and
we decided to visit it. It was housed in an old water mill on the outskirts and
we drove into the village, parked up and walked through to find it. When we got
there, the door was open but there was nobody on the desk. As we walked in, all
the lights came on and all the audio-visual displays were working. Assuming
that someone would arrive to take our money, we walked around the exhibits.
Jane did see a man on the phone who acknowledged our presence but nobody else
appeared. There were exhibits on olive oil production including a number of
presses, finds from the Ruedo villa and from pre-Roman sites. Outside, in a
basement, there were turbines that would have been powered by the water
entering the mill. The exhibits in the museum were very well presented with
many information panels in English.
We walked back to the van and then drove back to Cabra to the aire at the
Fuente del Rio.
Another sunny day and no rain – hurray!
Photos: There were modern pebble mosaics, copying Roman designs, in the pavement
on the way to the museum; Olive oil production equipment in the museum; A view
of Priego de Cordoba as we drove past; A red sunset seen from the aire in Cabra
– hopefully a sign of good weather again tomorrow.
