More rain overnight and in the morning.
We drove to Puente Genil and the Roman villa of Fuente Alamo, just outside the
town and the rain had stopped. A viewing platform at the reception building
gave a good view of the villa complex and its position within the landscape.
There are at least two villas here, the second being built over the top of the
first but features of the original villa, including a mosaic, are preserved.
The second villa’s mosaics are beautiful, especially the one of The Three
Graces, and the raised walkway allowed an excellent view of them.
The lady on reception explained that they will be carrying out more excavations
next year, which she was excited about, hoping that they may discover more
mosaics. We need to schedule another visit for two years’ time!
We drove to Cabra and to the aire on the edge of the town. There are two aires
in Cabra but we chose this one as it is next to a walking and cycling trail on
an old railway line and just a few metres from the aire is the Fuente del Rio.
The aire is very good with many generous pitches and two drive-over dumps and
fresh water stations – somewhat overkill.
Photos: The view from the platform of the Fuente Alamo villa and its
surroundings; A good geometric mosaic from the site; And the famous Three Graces
mosaic, A sample of mosaic in the small museum on the site, showing the mosaicist’s
tools; A model of the villa as the archaeologists believe that it would have
looked.
