Monday 31st March 2025 – Baeza, Spain

Happy Anniversary to us!
A relaxed start was followed by an excellent, varied breakfast. We walked the short distance to the tourist office through the pretty Plaza de la Constitucion with its two fountains, monuments and bandstand. Well, that should have been the case but the whole plaza was undergoing major works and was cordoned off. I am sure that it will be lovely once they have finished.
The tourist office is in a lovely building in a beautiful square with a large arched town gateway and another building with an elaborately carved façade. Surprisingly, the latter building was the town slaughter house. This is the second impressive slaughter house that we have seen in Spain – not something that we see in the U.K.! We were lucky in that, unusually for Spain, most of the sights that we wanted to see were open on a Monday and we were able to see almost all of the historic buildings in the compact centre.
Being a Monday, many of the restaurants were closed but we had booked the Mamma Juana restaurant which was just a few steps from the hotel. As is often the case in Spain, we had to eat late – they didn’t open until 20:30. It was a different type of restaurant to those that we had been to so far in Spain. It was tapas-based but the dishes were more like a Michelin starred restaurant, beautifully presented and very tasty and there house wine was also very good. Altogether, it was an excellent meal and a lovely way to celebrate our anniversary. As we returned to the hotel, we heard another band parading, with their route taking them close to us.
Photos: The Baeza tourist office; A carved Last Supper scene in the cathedral; A view from the cathedral tower – it got quite exciting (and loud) at noon when the bells started ringing!; We got lost in a maze of alleyways and there were lots of these raised, covered ways between the properties, probably belonging to the cathedral; Jane sharing a bench with a fellow book lover; The low-key Mamma Juana restaurant – highly recommended.
