Sunday 15th May 2022 – Les Riceys, France

We have had some very warm weather for some time now and today we are promised a maximum temperature of 30°C. The clear blue skies and strong sunshine suggest that the forecast may be correct.
It was another lovely drive through France on its quiet, wide roads. We had a mixture of reasonably major, but not busy, roads and more minor, country roads. Most of the route was flat and straight, making driving very easy whilst the scenery was still good. We started with mixed farmland and then vines as we approached Beaune in the heart of the Burgundy wine producing area. After that we entered an area of cereal production and huge fields, typical of large parts of Northern France. The route was scattered with chateaux, monasteries, rivers and canals as well as all of those pretty French villages. It was a journey that just reinforced my love of driving through France.
We were heading for an aire in the Champagne region that we have been to before. The Lamoureux Champagne house provides a five van aire, complete with water and dumping facilities and it is free to stay. Needless to say, it is quite a popular aire and, last time that we were here, we took the last place. This time we were the only people at the site. This is probably due to it being early in the season (last time it was harvest time) and because it was a Sunday when the Champagne House is closed. We are looking forward to the free Champagne tasting tomorrow and, perhaps, buying a few bottles.
As the night approached, we paid for all of that lovely weather as the sky was lit by bright flashes and rumbles shook the van. Rain quickly followed and there was a rapid closing of the hekis that we had opened to cool down the van.

Photos: We stopped for lunch near Beaune and the picnic area was also a stop on a long cycle trail through the Burgundy wine area and they even provided laid-back seats for the cyclists; This chateau / castle was right on our route; Directly behind the Lamoureux aire were these hens and goats.
