We continued our journey east but were still looking for
interesting places to stop. I found an aire on Park4Night that seemed to fit
the requirement and next to a national mining museum. Rumelange is in
Luxembourg and we have never stayed in that country.
We picked a route via Belgium and, as we often try to do, we found somewhere
interesting to stop for lunch. In the village of Spy (great name!) is Espace de
l’Homme de Spy. In 1886 a local cave was investigated and bones of animals and an
ancient human, the Man of Spy, were found. Later investigation proved that
there were bones of three of three individuals rather than one. The bones of
two adults and a child under two date back 36,000 years.
The museum is small but very well presented and there was an excellent video
with an English translation. We spent an hour in the museum and could have
walked to the cave, a fairly short walk up a hill on the other side of the main
road. However, we still had a couple of hours to drive and it was about 28°C,
so we decided to leave that for another day.
On then through Belgium to southern Luxembourg, very close to the French
border. The parking outside the mining museum clearly states that motorhomes
are only allowed during the day but further along the road are four long bays
for coaches and two for motorhomes. We were on our own in this quiet spot and
settled in for the night having booked a guided tour at the museum for 14:30
tomorrow.
Photos: The Spy cave (from a picture in the
museum – we didn’t get there!); A reconstruction of Spy Man (Spyrou) based on
the bones and skull found in the cave – cute isn’t he?; The Neanderthal family
and animals of the period; Our pitch in Rumelange – what we thought were
motorhome services in the foreground turned out to be a partly installed bike
washing facility.
