Friday 21st September 2007

The morning was spent in the Schloss (see photo) visiting the three museums – Art, Archaeology/Geology and 'Town Museum'. The art museum was very good but the staff outnumbered the visitors by about 10 to one and whenever we walked into a room one of the staff would arrive and stare at us the whole time. Very unnerving – did we really look that suspicious? By contrast, there were no staff at all in the archaeology/geology museum (very interesting) or the 'Town Museum' (all costumes, pottery and religious bits and pieces – not my idea of fun).
We then drove through (considerably up) the German National Park of 'Naturpark Bayerischer Wald', over the Czech border into its National Park of 'Narodni Park Sumava'. This was a very pleasant journey although a long one especially given the quality of roads on the Czech side. We were rather surprised and disappointed to see the rather seedy side of the Czech Republic at the border with the many striptease clubs, pole dancing clubs and dodgy-looking night clubs – obviously there is a demand from the German side.
We arrived at Horni Plana on the lake of Vodni Nadrz Lipno, just 3 or 4 miles from the Austrian border on the other side of the mountains. The site on the outskirts of Horni Plana was expensive (approx. £13.50 per night) by Czech standards but this has much to do with its location so close to the Austrian and German borders. There were very few people at the site so, once again, we had our choice of pitch – close to the lakeside with a wonderful view over to the mountains. Continuing the theme of the trip so far, we had the lake view and just up the road and quite audible, a railway track. We had a typical Czech restaurant meal of a large amount of meat with no vegetables and a simple salad, washed down with excellent Czech beer at less than 60p for half a litre. Eating out in the Czech Republic is very cheap!
