Sunday 9th September 2007

My friends at Aggregate Industries very kindly gave me a bottle of Champagne when I left and we always intended to drink it in the Black Forest on our second night of The Odyssey. However, this was our sixth night and we weren't moving anywhere on Monday, so we put it on ice – well in the fridge actually.
The area around Neiderbronn, and the rest of the park, is heavily forested and is full of castles – 500 in Alsace over the years. Most have disappeared but many still exist in various states of repair. We will probably visit one or two over the next few days.
This morning was dedicated to sorting things out – Jane washing and cleaning, me attempting to hang a large picture frame using self-adhesive Velcro. A fifteen minute walk took us into Neiderbronn, a very pretty village full of flowers as are many in the area. Lunch of onion tart with a glass of excellent Alsace Riesling next to the fountains in the centre was followed by a gentle perambulation around the village. We stumbled across a vintage / veteran car event sponsored by the Neiderbronn Casino - a Rolls Royce Silver Shadow was in the last five for the car of the show. Some really lovely old Peugeots and Renaults and old racing cars - no old motorhomes!
Back to the campsite for the first England match – well we won, but we did not play well and we won't stand a hope against South Africa unless we improve considerably. The excellent champagne made the evening go well, despite the fact that the oven went out part way through cooking and delayed the evening meal by 40 minutes.
