Wednesday 5th September 2007

To the Black Forest with one night in France, that was the plan. However, we did say that the plan was meant to be be very flexible and we were not going to be it's slaves. Distracted on the way by views, interesting villages and a 'route barrée' (the French are very keen on road closures!), we decided that 'lentement' was more interesting. The 'route barrée' led us to a British War Cemetery at Anneux with one grave to a Gordon (Jane's maiden name), but no Days. So many lives lost, so young to give us the freedom to live life in the way that we do. The Odyssey would not have been possible without the sacrifice on those soldiers of the First and Second World Wars. If we had been born in those times, life would have been so much harder. Decided to overnight at Grandpré NW of Verdun. This was a municipal site that we stumbled across, basic but perfectly acceptable and very reasonable at €9.35 (approx. £6.50). Grandpré was dead! We went to the only restaurant in the village – the lights were on, the door open but there was no one at home. It took us 10 minutes to raise any staff. The cook, waiter, till operator and washer-up was upstairs putting his children to bed! We ended up with a good meal and very attentive service – we were the only people in the restaurant and Jane became terribly excited when she saw someone passing the restaurant. The restaurant was in the centre of the village and that was the only person that we saw!
